Bolzano Refuge

The enchanted castle among the majestic mountain giants

The Bolzano Refuge stands proudly and imposingly, located at 2457 meters above sea level on the enchanting Sciliar plateau. This iconic mountain of South Tyrol embraces our hut like a magical castle, surrounded by the mighty and formidable massifs of the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, Catinaccio and Latemar.

For 45 years, the Gasser family has been welcoming alpine sports enthusiasts in search of rest, offering them a warm welcome and comfortable accommodation in one of the most wonderful huts in the entire region. Initially, it was my beloved parents Hilde and Rudolf who managed this precious haven of peace. Then, in 1999, Silvia and Harald took their place, carrying on the tradition with our passion, commitment to cleanliness, friendliness and excellent cuisine, studded with innovative ideas.

Here, every corner is enveloped in the typical atmosphere of mountain huts: there is no direct road to reach us (supplies arrive by cable car or, if necessary, with the intervention of a helicopter) and the environment is a mix of tradition and hospitality. You can relax and rest deservedly in our 120 beds, including private bedrooms and comfortable dormitories.

An authentic castle in the clouds, perfectly set in green pastures at the foot of majestic walls.

South Tyrolean cuisine will delight you with its unique flavours.

You will experience a typical and welcoming atmosphere in the warm and rustic parlours of the restaurant and the rooms.

How to reach the refuge:

From Siusi

Take the cable car of the same name and reach Compatsch on the Alpe di Siusi. From here, walk 10 minutes to the panoramic chairlift, then climb to the finish line and follow paths 6-5-1 to the Bolzano hut, passing by the Saltner hut. Difference in altitude: 670 m; Estimated travel time: 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Alternatively, take the Compatsch cable car and follow the paths 10-5-1 to the Bolzano Hut, via the Saltner Hut. Difference in altitude: 790 m; Estimated travel time: 3 hours and 20 minutes.

The ascent from the Saltner Hut, known as the "Tourist Trail", is well maintained and does not present any difficulties.

From Völs

From the picturesque village, always along the picturesque path number one, they venture past the pretty Völser lake and the cozy Malga Tuff, and then plough the "Path of the trunks" until they reach the majestic Malga Sessel and retire to the Bolzano Hut. The exciting elevation gain of 1620 meters requires about 5 hours of enterprising walking. For those who start from the convenient parking lot at the Laghetto di Fiè, there is an elevation gain of 1430 meters, completing the route in 4 hours and 30 minutes.

For those looking for a slightly more demanding challenge, we recommend following trail number three, nicknamed "Schäufelesteig", to the left of the "Peter Frag" crucifix at the beginning of the picturesque gorge. This intensive route will lead to the glorious destination in the Bolzano Hut, requiring the same elevation gain and travel time as the previous route.

For those who prefer to start from Umes, with the convenience of a parking lot and a bus, you can try your hand at the route by following path number three, past the enchanting Hofer Alpl, and then up to trail number one and reach the landmark in Peter Frag. From here, just continue as suggested above. This exciting adventure requires an elevation gain of 1550 meters and can be completed in 4 hours and 45 minutes.

Finally, from Tires, hiking enthusiasts can start from the parking lot at the Bagni di Lavina Bianca and take the route of path number two through the picturesque Orsara Gorge to the majestic Bolzano Hut. This exciting itinerary requires an elevation gain of 1280 meters and can be completed in about 4 hours.

Get ready to leave the everyday life behind and immerse yourself in an intriguing adventure among wild nature, breathtaking landscapes and ancient paths. These captivating routes will give you an unforgettable experience and make your adventurous spirit shine.
