Capanna Punta Penia Mountain Hut – Marmolada

The Capanna Punta Penia mountain hut is the highest mountain hut in the Dolomites, situated at 3,343 metres on the Marmolada in the municipality of Canazei (TN). Built in the late 1940s by converting an Austro-Hungarian military structure dating from the First World War, it offers basic shelter to mountaineers. Run by Andrea Gallo and Tobia De Marco, it is generally open from late June to September for the summer season.

Accommodation

The refuge has a limited number of beds, ranging from 6 to 9 depending on the layout, in dormitories with bunk beds. It is anchored to the rock by steel tie rods.

Food

The kitchen serves hearty, hot dishes typical of high-altitude cuisine, such as nourishing minestrone, pasta, stew and polenta.

How to Get There (Mountaineering Access Only)

Accessible only with mountaineering equipment (crampons, ice axe and rope) and sound technical skills. The main access routes are:

From the North (Glacier Route): Setting off from Pian dei Fiacconi, crossing the Marmolada glacier and the north ridge (difficulty EE / mountaineering, approx. 3.5 hours).

From the West (Via Ferrata): Route along the West Ridge via ferrata from Forcella Marmolada (difficulty EEA, approx. 2 hours from the start).

South Face: Reserved exclusively for experienced mountaineers for rock climbing.
