Helmet compulsory for skiing too
Starting from the 2025/2026 ski season, helmets have become mandatory for all skiers and snowboarders on the slopes in Italy, regardless of age.
Those who do not wear a helmet are subject to a fine of €150 and, in cases of repeat offences, may also have their ski pass withdrawn. The law aims to improve safety by reducing the risk of head injuries due to accidents or collisions.
How does the requirement work?
Who is affected: The requirement applies to anyone practising alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemark skiing, sledging and similar activities on authorised slopes.
When did it come into force: The requirement came into force with the 2025/2026 ski season.
Penalties:
First phase: Initially, the focus was on raising awareness among users.
Immediate penalties: Anyone caught without a helmet is subject to a fine of €150.
Penalties for repeat offences: In the event of repeated violations, in addition to the fine, the ski pass will be suspended for a period of 1 to 3 days.
Type of helmet: Approved helmets specifically designed for winter sports must be used. Helmets for other sports (e.g. cycling or mountaineering) are not permitted, as they do not provide the level of protection required for ski slopes.
