The Gustav Thöni slope in the Catinaccio Ski Area
The Thöni slope, located in the heart of the Val di Fassa, is one of the most fascinating and lesser-known routes of the Dolomiti Superski, definitely deserving a place among the best for lovers of carving skiing.
Extending for about 4.5 km (although some GPS measurements indicate just under 4 km), the track descends from the 2000 meters of Ciampedie until it reaches Vigo di Fassa, located at about 1550 meters above sea level. With its combination of speed and fun slope variations, it offers an immersive and dynamic skiing experience.
Inaugurated in 1977 and dedicated to the legendary Italian skier Gustav Thöni, the slope is famous for its breathtaking views of the Dolomites, so much so that it is affectionately called "Panoramica". Expert skiers here will find an ideal terrain to tackle exciting curves and variations in slope, alternating technical sections with easier sections that allow you to push on the accelerator.
At the beginning of the course, an easier section allows you to warm up your legs, and then give way to extended curves and sudden changes in slope. As you proceed, the beauty of the Val di Fassa reveals its spectacular views, with flat interludes between the trees suitable for short breaks.
In the final part, a series of serpentine hairpin bends challenges skiers to practice different turning techniques. The last section features a wide and steep wall, perfect for those who want to test their skills while maintaining the right balance. Alternatively, an easier route is available on the right.
In summary, the Gustav Thöni is an unmissable opportunity for those looking for a mix of adrenaline and unforgettable landscapes. After passing the final wall, skiers are free to enjoy tight turns at low speed or wide arcs at high speed. It is essential to control the speed carefully to maintain stability along the slope.
Finally, the track does not represent a great overall technical challenge, but its continuous changes in slope and passages in the woods guarantee unique emotions that invite you to try the experience again. Once in the valley, the skis can slide back in the direction of the cable car for another adventure on the Gustav Thöni.
